Scanning and digitizing your artworks has many advantages in our time. While physical works are of course the foundation of an artist's portfolio, digitizing your works expands the possibilities for collectors to interact with your works. Social media in particular allows you to easily share your latest works, add them to your online store or promote upcoming events. Furthermore, digitizing your artworks allows you to sell unlimited prints of your works.

How to Scan Small Artworks?

Many works of art that are A3 or smaller in size can be digitized using standard flatbed scanners. The most important feature of the scanner is the DPI (dots per inch) value. It is recommended to use a scanner with at least 1200 DPI to capture all the fine details and scale your work to almost any size.

How to Scan Large Works of Art?

You can use a professional large-scale scanner to digitize your large-scale artworks and paintings. Another way is to use standard flatbed scanners and combine your scanned artwork piece by piece with computer applications. This merging process is more difficult and requires expertise.

Editing Your Images

Among the various image editing tools, Photoshop is the most popular. Tools like Photoshop, GIMP and Canva can be used to correct colors or remove imperfections in your work. With these tools, you can easily make adjustments to get your scan just right.

Use Layers

Layers allow you to make adjustments without permanently altering your scan. This is why it is important to use layers when processing your digitized artwork. You can hide or delete layers when you don't need them.

Hue/Saturation

Sometimes scanners may not pick up colors correctly. For example, some images may have a slight yellow or blue tint due to light reflected from the scan. In this case, try adjusting the hue/saturation layer. When you use this layer, you can adjust the hue, saturation and lightness of your image. You can select specific colors to bring your artwork back to its original colors, or you can return your colors to their intended shades.

Curves

The Curves tool is great for setting certain highlights. For example, it allows you to lighten white backgrounds without affecting other colors in your work. Select the Drop tool, then choose the areas you want to make white and adjust the original artwork accordingly.

Once your digital creation is where you want it, remember to save it as a Photoshop file so you can go back and edit it if you want. We also recommend saving your image at a high resolution (+300 DPI) so you can scale and print it at the size you want. Finally, we recommend saving your work as TIFF or another lossless file type.
