Tahsin Kurt
He was born in Van in 1965. In the early 1980s, he engaged in Quranic sciences for a period at a madrasa in Isparta, where he received education in recitation (qira'at) and Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh). It was during these years that he developed an interest in art, attempting to imitate through self-study whichever calligraphic panel he came across.
Coming to Istanbul in the late 1980s, Calligrapher Tahsin Kurt began working at the Hayrat Publications Printing Facilities. Due to his deep passion for calligraphy, he spent his free time dedicated to this blessed art form. However, just as iron is shaped in the hands of a blacksmith master, he too needed to be shaped under the guidance of a master. And so it happened; when a mentor recognized his talent and effort and guided him, he established his first contact with Calligrapher Master Hasan Çelebi, receiving lessons in Riqa and Naskh scripts from him for about two years.
However, after going for military service in 1985 and returning, Kurt could not meet with his master, who was to stay abroad for a period. He then continued his calligraphy studies with another master of calligraphy, Prof. Ali Alparslan. Through the Ta'liq lessons he received from Prof. Ali Alparslan, he succeeded in receiving his icazet (license) in this field within three to four years.
