Basmalah
The Basmalah (the phrase Bismillah) is written at the beginning of the chapters (surahs) of the Holy Qur'an and has been frequently emphasized in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Prophet stated that any task started without the Besmele would remain bereft of blessings and incomplete. He encouraged starting with the Besmele when eating, drinking, opening or closing a door, and before sleeping at night.
Meaning "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful," the Besmele is not only a phrase every Muslim keeps on their lips but has also become one of the most repeated subjects in the art of calligraphy.
The dedication of calligraphers to this phrase is often inspired by sacred traditions. For instance, a narration from Hazrat Anas states: "Allah forgives the one who writes 'Bismillahirrahmanirrahim' with great care and devotion." Similarly, Hazrat Ali's word, "He who writes the Besmele beautifully has been forgiven," is regarded as a primary reason why calligraphers have chosen to render the Besmele so frequently throughout history.
